An early 19th. Century, English, Regency, Portor, black and gold marble chimneypiece. The deep moulded shelf above the frieze is centred with a lion’s mask. The pilaster jambs carved with Lion monopodia, the blockings above their heads decorated with sunflowers, the whole raised on plinth blocks. Lion monopodia jambs were popularised in the early 19th century by publications by the influential pioneers of the period; the architects H Holland and C H Tatham, The collector Thomas Hope and the furniture maker George Smith.
