I024
A superb, early 19th century statuary marble chimneypiece in the neo-classical Greek Revival style. Circa 1820. The centre tablet of this impressive chimneypiece features Medusa with a snake entwined in her hair and tied under her chin. The neoclassical style is echoed in the Greek Revival female herms on the square blockings, boasting finely carved draped heads with hair falling in curled ringlets and holding sunflowers carved with small flowers. The rectangular cavetto moulded shelf features delicate leaf and arrowhead decoration, while the frieze has alternating acanthus and crisply carved palm leaves, their ends falling and curling.
