A Megara marble chimney piece, Louis XIV, early 18th century. The rectangular, compound moulded shelf above an opening outlined with bolection moulding forming a serpentine frieze in a bow shape and with inner and outer mouldings. Magaris is a small but populous state of ancient Greece whose inhabitants were adventurous seafarers. The capital, Megara, is famous for is white marble which was highly prized for statuary. Cicero recorded ‘I have paid 20400 sesterces to Lucius Cincius for the statue made form marble from Megara’.
