The rectangular breakfront shelf above a conforming frieze centred by a rectangular tablet carved with ribbon tied swags of laurel leaves and flanked by panels of geometric blind carved trellis, the moulded opening carved with leaves and with fluted and stop fluted jambs, decorated with beads and headed by rectangular leaf carved paterae above mouldings and guttae and raised on shaped and canted base blocks. This chimney piece reflects the Neo-Classical forms in architecture and interior decoration that began in the1770s and superceeded the naturalistic Rococo styles that dominated the middle years of the eighteenth century. This charming carved stone example was probably made for a country chateau or villa as a the use of white or coloured marbles tended to be employed in Paris and large regional cities.
