An imposing, English, Neo-Classical, Roman Doric Order, column chimneypiece in Painswick stone, of unusually small size and patinated a soft and warm hue. Circa 1780. The tiered moulded shelf above the frieze is centred with a plain tablet which rests on guttae above the architrave. This is flanked by Metopes and Triglyphs. The jambs in the form of Doric capped fully rounded tapered columns, stand in front of pilasters. The opening framed with Cyma recta mouldings. The whole standing on foot blocks. Good 18th century stone chimneypieces are rare as few were made in the Georgian period as they were always put only in the main front hall. The Roman Doric Order did not become fashionable until the more pure Greek Doric Order was measured and published in 1762 by James Stuart and Nicholas Revett.
