A late 18th century, Sienna, Brocatello and Statuary marble chimney-piece of Neo Classical Irish design. The centre tablet carved with an oval floral sunburst flanked on either side by rectangular panels bordered in brocatello inlaid with flower heads of sienna. The blockings carved with lidded urns. The brocatello jambs faced with Statuary panels inlaid with cartouches of brocatello and centred with paterae. The whole raised on white blocks. Provenance; Bury Hill, Dorking, Surrey. The chimney was probably installed when the house was owned by Viscount Grimston, (Hon. James Bucknall) who as the third Viscount visited Italy between 1770 and 1772 and almost certainly ordered or purchased this chimney piece then. The house was occupied by the military in the Second World War and the centre was destroyed by fire on being converted in 1949, though the outer wings remain as apartments.
