Bucranium Mirror
This waist-shaped mirror frame has a distinctive ‘bucranium’ or ox skull cresting. The bucranium motif originated through the practice of adorning Roman temples with sacrificial oxen and garlanding them with fruit and flowers. It subsequently became a key motif of the Doric order of architecture and later the Neoclassical revival of the 1770s.
