A 19th Century copy of an early neo-classical chimneypiece aftera design by James Paine (1717–1789) in statuary marble inlaid with Spanish Brocatello, Italian convent Sienna and French Villefranche marbles. Circa 1765–1770. The shelf is breakfront layered with strong plain mouldings, above the frieze which is centred with a panel of Villefranche framed by white moulded statuary and flanked by finger flutes inlaid with Sienna and nicely drawn cusped blockings. The jambs are in the form of tapered half pilasters, inset with rich Brocatello and above squares of Sienna. The architrave and in grounds of plain statuary which contrasts and offsets the rich polychrome marbles.
