N099
A Regency chimneypiece of unusual Greek Revival design in Statuary marble. The jambs with Ionic pilasters running through the shallow frieze and upholding the moulded shelf. The aperture nicely defined with a crisp moulding. The whole on plinth blocks. Circa 1815. The austere and strongly architectural design of this chimney piece reflects the Regency fashion for noticeably lower and plainer fireplaces first tried and advocated by Sir John Soane in the 1790s. Often as in this example there is not enough height to accommodate a central sculptured bass relief or tablet.
