N087

A Statuary and Bardiglio marble chimney piece, English, early 19th century. The rectangular shelf with double moulded edge above a compound moulding and a Bardiglio marble frieze centred by a rectangular, incised tablet, the statuary marble opening with moulded top, the jambs in the form of turned and tapered Ionic, Bardiglio marble columns with carved capitals and moulded bases headed by rectangular blocks carved with classical urns all raised on Bardiglio marble bases. Bardiglio di Toscana marble is mined at Luni in Italy and was used extensively throughout the 18th and 19th centuries for external and internal architectural elements as well as for objects and chimney pieces. The subtle tones of the grey marble contrasts with the white of the carved statuary marble and the fine detail of the Ionic columns and the classically carved urns.
