I015
A carved stone chimney piece, Italian 19th Century. The rectangular moulded shelf and lintel is divided by a bolection moulded frieze. The jambs are carved as term figures, headed by scrolled capitals centred by scallop shells. The fluted volutes are decorated with garlands of fruit issuing from lions masks and raised on square moulded blocks. From the origins of the Renaissance style in Italy during the 1400s the architectural and decorative forms quickly spread throughout Europe. The style was revived again during the Nineteenth century and this carved chimney piece reflects that movement.
