A fine carved brown marble chimney piece, possibly Irish Georgian, circa 1740. The arched and moulded top sits above a carved cartouche decorated with a crest and flanked by scrolls and garlands of ribbon-tied fruit and leaves. The moulded opening is flanked by fluted and stop fluted jambs, headed by guttae and carved panels, and raised on moulded blocks. There are a number of designers who could have been responsible for this chimney piece at this date, but the name of William Jones seems a strong candidate. William Jones flourished from 1737 until his death in 1757. His ‘gentleman or buildres companion’, published in 1739, contained designs for a variety of interiors elements including chimneypieces, all in a strong architectural form.
